Cherry Angioma Removal

Overview

About cherry angiomas

Cherry angiomas are small, bright red or purplish spots that form when tiny clusters of blood vessels gather close to the surface of the skin. They are completely benign and do not develop into anything more serious, but many people find them cosmetically frustrating, particularly when they appear in visible areas.

They can be flat or slightly raised, range from a pinhead to a few millimetres in size, and tend to multiply with age. The chest, torso and arms are the most common locations.

Causes

Why cherry angiomas appear

Cherry angiomas usually start appearing in the thirties and forties, and become more common with age. They tend to run in families, are sometimes more numerous during pregnancy, and can be linked to hormonal changes.

They are not caused by sun damage or any underlying disease, and they are not contagious. Most people simply develop more of them over time.

These small red spots are utterly harmless — but a quick session can clear several at once and make a noticeable difference to how the skin looks.

The treatment

How cryotherapy works

A short, precise blast of ultra-cold gas is applied to each cherry angioma for five to fifteen seconds. The freeze collapses the small blood vessels that form the spot, so it gradually fades from the surface.

Most cherry angiomas clear after a single session, and several can be treated in the same appointment. Larger or deeper ones occasionally need a second treatment, spaced two to three weeks apart.

Your visit

What to expect

During treatment

You will feel a brief, sharp sting as the freeze is applied — over in a few seconds per spot. No anaesthetic is needed and you can drive home immediately after.

In the days that follow

The treated spots typically darken first, then form a small scab that lifts away over one to two weeks. Keep the area clean and dry, and avoid picking.

Over the next few weeks

The skin underneath heals smoothly. In most cases there is no visible mark; occasionally a slightly lighter patch may remain for a few weeks before settling fully.

Common questions

Frequently asked

Are cherry angiomas dangerous?

No — they are entirely benign. We always assess each spot at consultation, and if anything looks unusual we will recommend further investigation rather than treatment.

Will more keep appearing after treatment?

Treated spots will not return, but new cherry angiomas can develop elsewhere over time. They can be treated as and when they appear.

How many can be treated in one appointment?

Several at once, depending on size and location. We will agree the plan at your consultation.

Are they linked to anything more serious?

No, cherry angiomas are not associated with any underlying disease. They are a normal part of skin ageing for many people.

Will treatment work on darker skin tones?

Yes — but we treat with extra care on darker complexions to minimise the chance of any temporary lightening of the skin around the spot. We will discuss what to expect at your consultation.
